IPL Cricket Teams

Shane Warne is often said to be the best Australian captain to have never led the side.

What Shane Warne has on his hands now is a thinly balanced team with some international heavyweights on one side and a lot of inexperienced players on the other.

Warne will not only lead his bowling attack but also captain and coach it – that’s quite a task.

While there's no doubting the might of their first line of players, their second line don’t seem to be all that capable of handling the heat of international cricket.

Mumbai Indians

E-mail Print

Led by the iconic Sachin Tendulkar, the Mumbai Indians should become one of the most followed teams in the IPL.

They have specialists in every department. They have hard hitters at the top in Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya, a top class all-rounder in Shaun Pollock, an express pace bowler in Lasith Malinga and quality off spinners in Harbhajan Singh and Rajesh Pawar.

Mumabi's club circuit also breeds excellent talent. Some of Mumbai’s Ranji regulars would be their second line of offence in the IPL.

Kolkata Knight Riders

E-mail Print

This team seems to have it all – star power, utility, flashers, scroungers, pace and spin.

The Knight Riders have also been brisk in marketing and promotions, leading the way for everyone else.

In Sourav Ganguly, they also have a charismatic leader and they definitely appear one of the stronger teams in the fray.

The one thing that would work against them is the number of key players who would return to play Test cricket for their respective nations.

Players

Sourav Ganguly (Captain)
Ricky Ponting
Chris Gayle
Salman Butt
Aakash Chopra
David Hussey
Cheteshwar Pujara
Debabrata Das

Kings XI Punjab

E-mail Print

On the face of it, Kings XI have got their hirings desperately wrong. If their New Zealand, West Indies and Australia pros must return home to play Test cricket, it leaves this side threadbare, vulnerable and very much the dark horse in the fray.

If that's the case, Punjab may not appear threatening to the other star-studded sides.

Tom Moody has a proven track record as coach, something that Yuvraj Singh doesn’t as captain.

More than any other team, this side needs to make a solid beginning, for the going may get tougher after their international pros return home.

Players

Yuvraj Singh (Captain)
Mahela Jayawardene
Pankaj Dharmani
Karan Goel
Sahil Kukreja
Shaun Marsh
Wilkin Mota
Luke Pomersbach

Deccan Chargers Hyderabad

E-mail Print

On the face of it, Hyderabad look the best fielding side by far.

Andrew Symonds, Herschelle Gibbs, Shahid Afridi and Rohit Sharma are world-class fielders with explosive hitting capability.

They also have three sharp left-arm seamers in Vaas, RP Singh and Nuwan Zoysa and in the incomparable Adam Gilchrist behind the wicket for the whole course of the tournament.

Backing up these light-footed experienced pros is a bevy of local talent, none better than the upcoming left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha.

Led by the genial VVS Laxman, it would be a surprise if this team doesn't go far.

Players

VVS Laxman (Captain)
Herschelle Gibbs
Dwaraka Teja

Kolkata bank on Shoaib to keep Delhi down
Logic says never change a winning combination. Kolkata have won their last two games but may just turn that line of thinking on its head for this one, and unleash the latest Knight in their armour, Shoaib Akhtar, who has been waiting desperately for a go since touching down.

"A fit Shoaib, or even almost a 90 per cent fit Shoaib will be perfect for anyone. But again, at the same stage, we don't want to rush him in the competition," Kolkata coach John Buchanan says.
